How to Check Your iPhone IMEI, EID, and Carrier Lock Status

Your iPhone has several identification numbers and network settings that are useful when you are buying a used phone, moving to a new carrier, setting up an eSIM, or troubleshooting cellular service. The most important ones are the IMEI, ICCID, and EID. Knowing where to find them can save time and help you give accurate information to your carrier.

What is an iPhone IMEI?

IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. It is a unique identifier assigned to a cellular device. Carriers may use it to identify your iPhone, check network compatibility, process a device change, or investigate whether a phone is reported lost or stolen. An IMEI is not the same as your phone number, Apple Account, or SIM number.

How to find the IMEI on an iPhone

The quickest method is to open the Phone app and dial *#06#. iOS displays the device identifiers supported by the phone. You can also open Settings > General > About and scroll to IMEI, IMEI2, EID, and ICCID. If the iPhone is not activated, the IMEI may also be printed on the original packaging or shown on the device information screen during setup.

IMEI, IMEI2, ICCID, and EID explained

  • IMEI: The identifier for a cellular radio.
  • IMEI2: A second cellular identifier on supported Dual SIM iPhones.
  • ICCID: The identifier associated with a physical SIM or eSIM profile.
  • EID: The identifier used by the eSIM system in a compatible device.

Do not post these identifiers publicly. Share them only with a carrier or trusted seller when there is a genuine need. A screenshot containing an IMEI should be treated like other private device information.

How to check whether an iPhone is carrier locked

On modern iPhones, open Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock. “No SIM restrictions” generally means the device is unlocked. A locked device may accept only the carrier that originally sold or financed it. Carrier policies can change, so confirm the result with the carrier before buying a used iPhone or arranging an international trip.

Using Secret Codes: IMEI & Carrier

The Secret Codes: IMEI & Carrier app puts verified iPhone and carrier shortcuts in one searchable place. It includes carrier-specific entries for major US networks and MVNOs, SIM and eSIM references, carrier-lock guidance, and a one-tap option to open a code in Apple's Phone dialler. The app prepares the code but does not dial it for you.

What to check before buying a used iPhone

  1. Compare the IMEI in Settings with the original box or seller documentation.
  2. Confirm that Carrier Lock shows the result you expect.
  3. Check Battery Health, storage, cameras, speakers, microphones, and the display.
  4. Make sure Activation Lock has been removed before payment.
  5. Ask the carrier to confirm compatibility if the phone will be used on a different network.

IMEI information is helpful, but it is not a complete ownership or repair history. Always use the carrier's official checker and complete the normal Apple setup process before considering a used iPhone ready for daily use.
